Growing the Game: Community Tennis in Action

At Youth Tennis San Diego, we are proud of our commitment to growing the game of tennis and creating meaningful opportunities for players throughout our community. On Saturday, February 28th, more than 30 community players of all ages joined us at the Barnes Tennis Center for our annual After School Tennis Doubles Tournament. Participants of all ages, enrolled in our After School Tennis (AST) programs, were invited to compete in this free community event — and for many players, it was their very first tournament experience!

A Day Full of Fun and Competition
With our community coaches on court to guide players through match format, scoring, and provide positive encouragement, the day was both educational and inspiring. Experiences like this not only introduce players to tournament play, but also build confidence and foster a lasting love for the sport.
Players were welcomed with snacks, sunglasses, and sweatbands before reviewing the rules and warming up their serves. Teams were formed, the matches began, and the excitement quickly filled the courts! The tournament was designed in a round robin format using no-ad scoring and a non-elimination structure, ensuring that every player had multiple opportunities to compete throughout the morning. Each match consisted of one set, allowing for continuous play while keeping the energy high. Players demonstrated impressive effort, teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship from start to finish.
Ribbons were awarded to all first, second, and third place teams in each age division. However, the most meaningful recognition of the day was our Player Sportsmanship Award. This special honor was given to players who competed with kindness (win or lose), worked hard, and demonstrated a never-give-up attitude. Sportsmanship winners received a Barnes t-shirt and an ice cream gift card to celebrate their achievement.

Ending on a High Note
The event wrapped up with everyone back on court, music playing, and kids rallying for prizes — the perfect way to celebrate a successful day of tennis. Community events like this are vital to keeping tennis fun, competition encouraging, and players motivated to continue progressing in their game. We are incredibly proud of our community programs and the positive impact they create each and every day.
Congratulations to all of our winners, and a heartfelt THANK YOU to our dedicated community coaches who made the day such a success! We look forward to seeing everyone again at our next community tournament in April.
