Back on the Courts This Winter!

Winter is in full swing and so is tennis across San Diego! All parks, schools, and Barnes After School Tennis (AST) programs are officially back in action. From San Ysidro to Tierrasanta to La Jolla, and right here in Point Loma, our dedicated community instructors are on the courts each and every day, bringing the joy of tennis to youth throughout the region.
With more than 50 AST programs running across San Diego, we are reaching hundreds of local players each session. Through our After School Tennis programs, we focus on teaching the fundamentals of tennis, building player confidence on and off the courts, and fostering a lifelong love for the game.
We are incredibly grateful for our team of community instructors. Many of whom are also teachers at their school sites—who, despite busy schedules, make time to share tennis with students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the sport.
By building joy into the foundation of tennis at a young age, we are able to nurture players to continue the sport for years to come, and inspire them to DREAM BIG!
The early experiences on the court help build discipline, teamwork, and confidence, creating a strong foundation that players carry with them as they advance to high school teams and beyond. By introducing young athletes to the game in a supportive and fun environment, we spark the passion and drive needed to continue their tennis journeys. We take pride in fostering a community of mentors, friends, and role models who inspire one another to aim higher, push further, and grow both on and off the court.
One of our recent success stories is Ella, a high school freshman who proudly earned a spot on her school’s varsity tennis team this year, and was named Rookie of the Year by her high school coach, Chris Caylor. Ella credits much of her success to the early foundation she received through AST programs in elementary and middle school. Joining the team has positively shaped her first year of high school, connecting her with an incredible group of teammates, all whom are strong, motivated, and united by their love of tennis.
Ella shared:
“Tennis has helped change my high school experience because I met some of my closest friends during the season and became more involved at school. I am grateful I started tennis so young through the AST programs because it gave me the opportunity to become a strong player and learn new strategies every day.”
Her story is just one example of how early experiences on the community courts can spark confidence, build lifelong friendships, and set players on a path to success both on and off the tennis court.
We are proud of our community programs and the meaningful impact they create every day. Building confidence on the court creates a ripple effect far beyond tennis—helping students grow in the classroom and in life.
