Beyond the Baseline is our blog series dedicated to sharing the real stories of those who Youth Tennis San Diego’s programs have impacted. Each feature includes a personal journey followed by a Q&A, giving deeper insight into how tennis and community support have shaped their experiences. From young players finding confidence on the court to volunteers and donors making a lasting difference, these stories highlight the power of accessible tennis to change lives.

YTSD is proud to highlight Soa “Tia” Ainatia Andriamaniraka! She is a competitive tennis player from Madagascar and a standout 10th-grade student-athlete at Bonita Vista High School. As of late 2025, she captured the Mesa League Championship as the number one singles player. She currently trains in our South Bay community programs with YTSD instructor Ian Chain and has played competitive tennis for approximately five years. Tia excels on the court with her skills and off the court with her confidence, kindness, and enthusiasm for her future. Although she is relatively new to our local community programs, she brings positive energy and a high level of play that complements our other players. We are excited to see where her tennis journey will lead and look forward to supporting her along the way!

What was your first experience with tennis (where/when)?

I grew up in Antananarivo, Madagascar, and fell in love with tennis when I was about ten years old. My parents quickly enrolled me in tournaments, and by the time I was 11, I had been selected to play for the Malagasy Juniors’ National Team at the renowned “Les Petits As” U12 tournament. I had been selected to compete internationally, but due to the COVID restrictions, our team wasn’t able to travel outside of Madagascar.  We didn’t want this setback to slow down my development, so I used that time to train even harder. My family and I persevered and shifted our focus to local competitions, and eventually, I was able to win the national titles of my respective categories 4 years in a row.

With the support of so many people, I eventually earned the chance to compete internationally with the Malagasy Junior Team. Then, in August 2025, my family and I moved to San Diego, and I’ve been training and competing with YTSD ever since.

How have the coaches and/or mentors at YTSD influenced you?

The coaches at YTSD shaped me not only as a player but also as a person. Coach Ian and Coach Irish have tremendously helped me.

Coach Ian, in particular, has played a major role in helping me develop my tennis skills and become more socially confident in such a short period of time. Being new in this country is challenging, especially when it comes to finding friends who share the same passion. Coach Ian introduced me to new people and helped me build friendships with others who share the same love for tennis. Having him as a coach opened new doors for me, especially the chance to participate in tournaments outside of my high school that I might never have discovered on my own. I am truly grateful and consider myself beyond blessed to have met him.

What’s one accomplishment you’re most proud of, and how did YTSD contribute to it?

My most recent accomplishment was winning the title of the L6 tournament at Barnes Tennis Center. During that tournament, I had the opportunity to compete with really amazing players and acquire new experiences. Playing tournaments with that high of a level lets me draw lessons and develop my skills under pressure during competition. Moving from my home country was a big step out of my comfort zone, but YTSD has provided me with tournaments that helped me get back on my feet and keep competing.

YTSD Coach, Ian Chain, Insight:

“When I met Ainatia, the moment I saw her I could tell she was different. She stepped onto my court at Sunbow Park in Chula Vista with her tennis gear and a lot of energy. She told me she had played tennis before and had recently come to the U.S. from Madagascar. I knew she would be good, but I had no idea what was awaiting me. I fed the first ball and she hit it with more quality than I had ever seen from any player in the programs I had coached. I kept feeding balls… and she wouldn’t miss. I had her rally with me and she really made me work to keep the ball in play. She even forced a few errors from me and hit some winners. After the class, her family told me that her dream is to play Division I tennis at a school where she can study medicine and become a doctor."

"I am committed to spreading the love of tennis, developing junior players, and helping them achieve their goals. Being a YTSD coach allows me to help players of all ages and levels, whether it is at the Barnes Tennis Center or throughout the San Diego community. I made myself a promise to do everything in my power to help Ainatia, and all of my players, go as far as they can and become the best players possible. I am excited to see all the things Tia can achieve on and off the courts!"

Congrats to Soa Ainatia Andriamaniraka! We are all so proud of you and look forward to watching your continued success both on and off the court. Keep up the great work!
