Beyond the Baseline : Dash So
Beyond the Baseline is our blog series dedicated to sharing the real stories of those who Youth Tennis San Diego's programs have impacted. Each feature includes a personal journey followed by a Q&A, giving deeper insight into how tennis and community support have shaped their experiences. From young players finding confidence on the court to volunteers and donors making a lasting difference, these stories highlight the power of accessible tennis to change lives.
At Youth Tennis San Diego (YTSD), every player has a story that reaches far beyond the baseline. Through tennis, young athletes discover confidence, build meaningful friendships, learn resilience, and begin to see what’s possible when they believe in themselves. In this edition of Beyond the Baseline, we’re spotlighting Dash, whose tennis journey began at just five years old and has grown into a passion fueled by friendly sibling competition, a love for the game, and the encouragement of coaches who believe in his potential.
As a member of YTSD’s Serving the Future Scholars Cohort and the Steve Adamson Academy at Barnes, Dash continues to build on his tennis development while embracing new opportunities for growth, mentorship, and leadership. From chasing down seemingly impossible drop shots to dreaming of playing collegiate tennis, Dash’s story is a wonderful reminder that the impact of tennis extends far beyond the court.
Player Spotlight! Dash So

How did Dash get started in tennis?
Dash's tennis journey began at age five during the COVID pandemic. With three energetic boys in the house, our family was looking for an outlet, and tennis quickly became the perfect fit. He started playing at University City High School, where his competitive spirit immediately came to life. As the youngest of three brothers, Dash was determined to keep up and eventually beat them. What started as sibling rivalry soon turned into a genuine love for the game.

It didn't take long for us to notice that tennis seemed to come naturally to him. His quickness around the court, fittingly living up to his name, and his developing forehand showed early promise.
Even today, one of his favorite things to do is chase down a drop shot that everyone thinks is out of reach. Few things bring a bigger smile to his face than sliding into the ball and hitting a drop shot right back.
Our family was introduced to Youth Tennis San Diego through a USTA development camp hosted at Barnes Tennis Center. Soon afterward, Dash joined the Green Ball program, and over the years he has progressed into the Steve Adamson Tennis Academy Development Group.

What has his journey with YTSD been like?
YTSD and Barnes has had a tremendous impact on Dash, both as a player and as a person. Through training, competition, and the encouragement of coaches and peers, he has learned the importance of discipline, consistency, hard work, and resilience. Just as importantly, he has gained confidence in himself and learned that growth comes from showing up each day with a willingness to improve.

Much of that growth can be traced back to Coach Ivan Thamma, who has played an important role in Dash's development. Dash loves the energy and intensity Coach Ivan brings to every lesson and is always eager to work on whatever challenge is in front of him.
"Coach Ivan has helped me develop my tennis game and always motivates me to get better and be resilient. He has taught me to be determined and work hard. Most importantly, he believes in me, which helps me believe in myself whenever I need it."
As a parent, one of the things we appreciate most is that Coach Ivan teaches much more than tennis. The lessons about perseverance, accountability, and believing in yourself are lessons that will stay with Dash long after his playing days are over.
One accomplishment Dash is particularly proud of is progressing from the Green Ball program into the Steve Adamson Tennis Academy Development Group. Looking back at where he started, it is rewarding for him to see how much he has grown, and YTSD has been there every step of the way. Beyond the tennis itself, Barnes Tennis Center has become a second home. It is a place where Dash has built friendships, found positive role models, and surrounded himself with other kids who share his passion for improving and competing.

What is his most memorable YTSD experience?
One of Dash's most unforgettable YTSD experiences came during the Tennis Warehouse ATP Challenger hosted at Barnes Tennis Center. Through YTSD, he was introduced to professional player Tristan Boyer, who unexpectedly offered to spend time with him and hit together on court. What started as a normal after-school pickup suddenly became something incredibly special.
Instead of heading home, Dash got the chance to rally with a professional player, ask questions, and experience firsthand what high-level tennis looks like. It was a surprise he never saw coming and a memory he will never forget. Opportunities like that are what make YTSD so unique. Beyond coaching and training, the program creates connections and experiences that inspire young players to dream bigger and work harder toward their goals.
What are Dash's future goals?
Dash dreams of continuing his tennis journey and one day competing at the collegiate level. He loves the challenge of improving and is excited to see where tennis can take him. One of his future goals also speaks volumes about the impact YTSD and Coach Ivan have had on him. Someday, he hopes to give back to the sport by becoming a coach himself.
"One of my goals is to play tennis in college and compete at a Division I school. I also want to become a coach someday and help other kids develop their tennis game, just like Coach Ivan helped me."
For our family, tennis has become much more than a sport for Dash. Through Youth Tennis San Diego, he has learned the value of hard work, resilience, friendship, and believing in himself. We are grateful for the coaches, mentors, and community that have helped shape his journey so far, and we look forward to seeing where that journey takes him next.
Dash’s journey is still unfolding, and through Youth Tennis San Diego and the Serving the Future Scholars Cohort, he continues to grow not only as a player, but also as a young leader with big dreams for the future. With the support of dedicated coaches, a community that feels like a second home, and opportunities that encourage him to reach his full potential, Dash is discovering that success is about more than wins and losses. It’s about showing up, working hard, believing in yourself, and inspiring others along the way.
His coach, Ivan Thamma, couldn't agree more:
“Dash is a wonderful kid and great athlete! He is such a hard worker and just puts a smile on your face. His name is Dash for a reason because the kid is lightning quick!”
Perhaps the most meaningful part of Dash’s story is his hope to one day become a coach himself, helping another young player discover their own potential. That’s the heart of Beyond the Baseline and the mission of Youth Tennis San Diego: celebrating the young athletes our community is helping shape today and the confident, resilient, and compassionate leaders they will become tomorrow.
Congratulations on all your success, Dash! Keep up the great work. We look forward to following your tennis journey and celebrating all the exciting milestones ahead. We can't wait to see where your journey takes you!
