Beyond the Baseline is our blog series dedicated to sharing the real stories of those who Youth Tennis San Diego's programs have impacted. Each feature includes a personal journey followed by a Q&A, giving deeper insight into how tennis and community support have shaped their experiences. From young players finding confidence on the court to volunteers and donors making a lasting difference, these stories highlight the power of accessible tennis to change lives.

For many young players, the first time they pick up a tennis racket is simply the beginning of a new sport. But with the right opportunity, encouragement, and a place to grow, that first swing can become the start of something much bigger. At Youth Tennis San Diego and the Barnes Tennis Center, young players are given the opportunity to discover their love for tennis and, for those who want to take their game further, a pathway to develop their skills and grow into competitive players.

Meet Patrick Ingham! His story is a wonderful example of the journey that can begin with simply picking up a racket and discovering a love for the game. Patrick first stepped onto the courts at Barnes as a skeptical 7-year-old, joining our Red Ball Clinic. At the time, he was much more interested in baseball—but it didn’t take long for tennis to capture his attention.

From there, Patrick progressed through our Red, Orange, and Green Ball programs, continuing to grow his skills and passion for the sport. Today, Patrick is a passionate young competitor playing in Level 5 and Level 6 tournaments. He is also part of the Steve Adamson Academy and the Serving the Future Scholars Cohort, continuing to challenge himself both on and off the court.

Along the way, the support and encouragement of dedicated coaches and mentors at Barnes have helped Patrick develop far more than his tennis game. Through each stage of his journey, he has built discipline, confidence, determination, resilience, and a genuine love of competition. Patrick’s story is a reminder that every great tennis journey has a starting point. Sometimes, it begins with a 7-year-old who isn’t quite sure about tennis—and a coach, a program, or a community willing to give him the opportunity to discover what he can become.

Q&A

When did your tennis journey begin?

I was just a little guy when I first picked up a racket, but my love for tennis really started when I was 7 years old, when I joined the Youth Tennis San Diego Red Ball Clinic at Barnes Tennis Center. My parents signed me up, even though I was pretty skeptical because I loved baseball. But after my first session, I was hooked! Before long, I was dreaming about winning the US Open and Wimbledon!

How has your passion for tennis grown over the years?

My passion for tennis has grown over the four years since I started. I’ve been fortunate to learn and grow through the Red, Orange, and Green Ball programs and the Steve Adamson Academy. The coaches at YTSD and Barnes have helped me develop my skills and given me opportunities to challenge myself and become a more competitive player. This summer, I won my first Level 6 tournament at Barnes and started competing in Level 5 tournaments. When I’m not playing at Barnes, you can usually find me doing footwork exercises in my backyard or practicing shadow swings in my living room. Because of Barnes, the coaches, and all of the programs I’ve been a part of, tennis has become such a big part of my everyday life.

What is one of your favorite memories on the courts?

One of my best tennis memories at Barnes is winning my first orange ball tournament when I was 8 years old. After we got to Barnes my dad got a phone call from my mom and he had to go to the hospital. I stayed to play and won all my matches and went home with my aunt and uncle. Later that day I got the news that my baby brother was born!

What's one accomplishment you're most proud of, and how did Barnes/YTSD contribute?

I'm proud of my record after losing the first set. My best win was one where I was down 3-6, 2-5, 15-40, and I came back, saving three match points before winning in the third-set tiebreaker. My coaches at Barnes helped me learn the importance of never giving up and always keep fighting.

How have the coaches and mentors at Barnes influenced you?

My coaches at Barnes have taught me a lot about strategy and technique. They've also taught me a lot about the importance of character.

They're always emphasizing the importance of discipline, hard work, competing with intensity, and playing with the right attitude.

My coaches really stress the importance of becoming a machine that always makes the ball and puts one more ball back into play. To do this, you really have to be disciplined and determined to keep fighting.

Barnes Tennis Director, Steve Adamson, says:

“Patrick is an outstanding young player with an exceptional attitude. He works extremely hard, is very coachable, and always comes to the court ready to learn and improve. Just as importantly, he is a great kid. Those qualities are what make Patrick such a pleasure to coach and give him a strong foundation for his future in tennis.”

How has YTSD impacted you?

YTSD has helped me find my passion, and it has connected me with a whole new community and led to great friendships. It's hard to imagine my life without Barnes and YTSD!

What is your dream for tennis?

I still dream of playing professional tennis someday, although I also try to keep an open mind when my parents and grandparents encourage me to attend college first. I know that reaching my goals will take a lot of hard work, discipline, and determination. But tennis has taught me that hard work can be rewarding and gratifying—and that makes me want to keep working toward my dreams.

Congratulations, Patrick! Your Barnes Tennis family is incredibly proud of you! Keep working hard, dreaming big, and believing in yourself. We are so excited to be part of your journey, both on and off the courts. Keep going—you’re just getting started!
