Kids Day Success: Inspiring the Next Generation Through Tennis

Youth Tennis San Diego was honored to partner with the Washed Up Cup Tournament at the University of San Diego this past weekend for a truly unforgettable Kids Day!

The Washed Up Cup is an annual event that brings together former collegiate and professional tennis players who still share a passion for high-level competition and a love for the game. While the weekend celebrates lifelong friendships and competitive tennis, it also embraces the opportunity to give back—using the sport to inspire the next generation of players.

That mission perfectly aligns with Youth Tennis San Diego's commitment to making tennis accessible to all youth, regardless of financial circumstances or ability. Through affordable and scholarship-based programs, YTSD uses tennis as a vehicle to build confidence, character, healthy lifestyles, and brighter futures for thousands of children throughout San Diego.

On Sunday, August 2, local YTSD players and their families stepped onto the courts at USD for an afternoon filled with tennis, laughter, and inspiration. For many of these young athletes, it was their very first time playing on a college tennis court—a moment that sparked excitement from the very first ball.

The fun only continued from there!

Thanks to the generosity of the tournament and HEAD, every child received a new tennis racquet and hat to take home!

Throughout the afternoon, Washed Up Cup tournament players traded competition for coaching, leading the kids through exciting drills, games, and friendly match play. From forehands and backhands to serves and rallies, the courts were filled with smiles, encouragement, and high-fives. All kids and families were provided lunch by Urbane Café, while ten special "Players of the Day" were recognized with swag bags for demonstrating grit, teamwork, sportsmanship, and one unforgettable "shot of the day." These awards celebrated not only great tennis, but the character and determination that make champions both on and off the court.

Events like Kids Day are about so much more than tennis. They are an opportunity for accomplished players to give back to the next generation by sharing their time, encouragement, and passion for the sport. For our young athletes, spending the day with former collegiate and professional players made their dreams feel a little more attainable. They experienced firsthand what dedication, perseverance, and a love for the game can lead to.

At Youth Tennis San Diego, we hope every child leaves the court believing they can continue their tennis journey—whether that means making a high school team, competing in college, or simply discovering a lifelong love of the sport. By creating opportunities to connect with role models who have walked that path before them, we help our players dream bigger and believe that they belong on every court they step onto.

A heartfelt thank you to tournament directors Louise Ronaldson and Madison Harrison, the Washed Up Cup participants, HEAD, Urbane Café, and everyone who volunteered their time and generosity to make this special day possible. Your kindness created memories that will last a lifetime and reminded our young players that the tennis community is one that lifts each other up.
