Beyond the Baseline is our blog series dedicated to sharing the real stories of those who Youth Tennis San Diego’s programs have impacted. Each feature includes a personal journey followed by a Q&A, giving deeper insight into how tennis and community support have shaped their experiences. From young players finding confidence on the court to volunteers and donors making a lasting difference, these stories highlight the power of accessible tennis to change lives.
Kaiya's Story:
At just 16 years old, Kaiya has set an inspiring goal for herself this past summer: to learn tennis and earn a spot on her high school team this fall. With determination and a positive spirit, she enrolled in our Adaptive Summer Camps at Barnes and consistently attended our After School Tennis - High School Summer Program twice a week.

Kaiya also joined the excitement of YTSD’s Friday Takeovers, welcoming more than 200 players throughout the season, with up to 65 kids on the courts each week! These experiences not only helped her build skills but also introduced her to a supportive tennis community.
Q&A
What was your first tennis experience?
I was first introduced to tennis in middle school. It was not the best experience for me because it was difficult to learn how to play in my wheelchair. I had no idea that there were adaptive sports, let alone sports wheelchairs that help with speed and maneuverability. I also had no idea how to hold the racquet and push in my everyday chair. I was reintroduced to tennis when the tennis coach at my high school came to talk to me about adaptive tennis. Coach Caylor introduced me to Manny Gomez and the Barnes Adaptive Tennis Clinic. I was reluctant to try tennis given my previous experience, but with encouragement from both Coaches, I figured I would give it a try.
What has been your most unforgettable moment?
The most fun I had at YTSD was the High School Takeover Program at Barnes. It was amazing to be able to meet so many different kids my age in this sport. I was able to create new friendships with people from not only my school, but also from surrounding high schools. I had plenty to learn about tennis and was able to gain confidence with so much playing time between Adaptive tennis and High School Takeover. I enjoyed learning and playing different games such as King of the Court, Brownies, and Triples.
How have coaches/mentors at YTSD influenced you?
The coaches at YTSD have influenced me immensely in the little time I have known them. Working with Coach Manny, I have learned so many new skills. I have a more reserved personality, and Coach Manny challenges me to be more talkative. Coach Ana has given me perspective on college options and helped improve my serve. Having adaptive athletes as coaches has helped me be a more confident athlete and more comfortable in my abilities. I am grateful for new opportunities and excited about what comes next for me.
YTSD is extremely proud of Kaiya as she embarks on her tennis journey. Recently making her high school tennis team, she continues to challenge herself and grow both on and off the court. Keep up the great work, Kaiya. We’re cheering for you every step of the way! Here’s to dreaming big, believing in yourself, and reaching new heights. You’ve got this!

Coach’s Words on Kaiya – High JV Tennis
“Something about Kaiya is that she will always give 100% on the court, with a great attitude and a smile on her face. She comes from a basketball background, but as soon as she got on the tennis courts, she put in the work and earned her spot on the team, becoming one of our most consistent doubles players. We are more than happy Kaiya joined the team and hope she continues throughout her high school career.”
– Coach Alexis Miramontes, JV Tennis
