From SpongeBob Rackets to College Tennis: Mattie’s Full-Circle Journey
At Youth Tennis San Diego, Beyond the Baseline is more than a blog series—it’s a window into the real stories that define our community. These are the journeys of players, coaches, and mentors whose lives have been shaped by opportunity, support, and a shared love of tennis. Few stories capture that spirit more fully than Matthew “Mattie” Gosling.
Mattie’s journey began 15 years ago at the Barnes Tennis Center, when he first stepped onto the court as a 4-year-old, in our After School Tennis (AST) program. Like many young players, he started with a tiny racket, endless energy, and a love for the games. Even then, there was something special about him! His enthusiasm was contagious, his kindness stood out, and his willingness to learn set the foundation for everything that followed.
Over the years, Mattie has progressed through every level of programming offered at Barnes. He shows up consistently, puts in the work, and embraces every opportunity to grow—not just as a player, but as a person. His positive attitude and dedication make him a standout both on and off the court. Now a senior at St. Augustine High School, Mattie has reached an incredible milestone - leading his high school tennis team to victory as captain and currently recognized as one the top players in San Diego Unified School District. His leadership, passion, and skill are undeniable. Yet, ask anyone in the community, and they’ll tell you his greatest strength is his character.
Mattie is one of the kindest competitors you’ll meet. His sportsmanship, positivity, and genuine ability to connect with others have earned him friendships across schools and throughout the tennis community. He represents everything Youth Tennis San Diego strives to instill in its players. What makes his story even more meaningful is his commitment to giving back. Despite a demanding schedule of academics and competitive tennis, Mattie dedicates time each week to coaching younger players at Barnes and offsite at our community programs. As one of YTSD’s most beloved AST instructors, he brings patience, encouragement, and energy to every lesson—passing on the same joy and passion that first inspired him as a child.
And now, his journey reaches an exciting new chapter! This fall, Mattie will continue his academic and athletic career at Occidental College, competing at the collegiate level. It’s a well-earned achievement that reflects years of perseverance, resilience, and love for the game!
🎤 Q&A with Mattie:

● What was your first experience with tennis (when/where)?
My first experience that I can remember was with Coach Lindsey on Court 1 at Barnes, using my SpongeBob racket to play fun games during AST with my friend Will.
● How has YTSD impacted you?
YTSD has given me my passion. From starting out with AST when I was 4, to becoming the captain for my high school team and now headed to play collegiate tennis at Occidental College, tennis has been a huge part of my life. YTSD gave me a second family at the Barnes Tennis Center and introduced me to so many influential people and lifelong friends. Whether it’s my doubles partner, a coach or a tournament director, I am now so involved in the tennis world because of YTSD.

● What’s your funniest or most unforgettable memory with YTSD?
I’ve had so many great memories, it’s hard to choose—but my favorite has to be having a snowball fight with the kids at Urban Village around Christmas time last year. The chaos of 17 kids throwing snowballs at 3 coaches made it both fun and a serious workout!

● How has YTSD helped you develop skills beyond tennis?
From my first day, I learned sportsmanship and teamwork. I learned that to improve and have fun, I needed to work with others. Competitive clinics taught me discipline—showing up even when I didn’t feel like it. Most importantly, YTSD taught me gratitude. Without the support of YTSD, I wouldn’t have had these opportunities or friendships I have today.

● What’s one accomplishment you’re most proud of?
One accomplishment I am incredibly proud of is committing to play tennis at Occidental College. All of the hard work over the years has led to this moment, and I couldn’t be more happy or grateful. YTSD gave me the spark that ignited a 15 year passion for tennis—a fire that still burns strong today. The support I received through scholarships and funding allowed me to pursue the sport I love and made this journey possible. I truly cannot emphasize enough that without YTSD and all it has provided, I would not be in a position to compete at this level.

● How have the coaches and mentors at YTSD influenced you?
The most important part of my tennis journey has been meeting so many friends and coaches along the way. Coach Lindsey taught me the fundamentals of tennis and how to act properly on the court. She also taught me how to keep score and introduced me to the fun games that I now use when coaching younger players.
Coach Cody has taught me to become more than a good tennis player - but a well rounded young man. Everyone I’ve met through YTSD reflects its mission—to build not just players, but people of character who love the game and treat others with kindness.

● Additional Thanks:
I also want to thank my mom for her unwavering support from the very beginning—none of this would have been possible without her.
And to my sister, who is truly the best, thank you for sitting through and cheering me on in so many of my matches. Your support means everything to me.
From a young beginner in AST to a collegiate athlete and mentor, Mattie’s journey is a true full-circle moment—and a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact of accessible tennis.
From all of us at YTSD and Barnes, we’d like to say congratulations, Mattie, on your incredible success in tennis! Wherever your journey takes you, we are honored to have been a part of it. We wish you the very best in this next chapter and look forward to watching you continue to thrive and grow—both on and off the court!
