A Heartwarming Connection and the Power of Representation in Sports

In the world of youth sports, it's not just about learning the game – it's about building confidence, creating connections, and showing kids that anything is possible. This session on the courts in City Heights, we are reminded just how powerful representation can be, and how one small act can change a child’s experience forever.

Zoey, a young girl who recently joined our tennis program, had her first tennis lesson last month, and it was nothing short of special. Zoey’s mom reached out to us a few months ago, hoping to find a way for Zoey to join our community programs. Zoey had always been interested in tennis but was nervous about participating in group lessons because she didn’t see anyone else like her. Well, this session when we introduced Zoey to coach Ana Firvida everything clicked. Ana’s talent, passion for the game, and ability to adapt to any situation makes her an ideal mentor for Zoey. Ana doesn't just coach tennis – she coaches confidence, resilience, and determination.

Ana’s understanding and personal experience made it possible for Zoey to adapt the sport to her own abilities, all while feeling like she truly belonged. It was incredible to watch as Zoey smiled and played with the other kids, fully immersed in the game, with a new sense of confidence.

After the lesson, we received a heartwarming thank-you note from Zoey’s mom, Danielle, which completely captured the essence of this experience. Here’s what she wrote:

"Thank you SO much for inviting Zoey to the program. She had a lot of fun and is looking forward to playing again next Wednesday. It is so amazing to give her opportunities to see women who look like her playing sports and doing everything that someone with two hands can do. I really, really appreciate you reaching out to us. And Ana, thank you so much for being her coach! She was telling her friends at school this morning about her tennis lesson with you. Thanks again, Danielle."

Reading Danielle’s words is a wonderful reminder of why representation matters. We couldn’t be more proud of the tennis community we’ve built in City Heights. It’s not just about teaching tennis; it’s about building a space where kids feel supported, inspired, and valued, no matter their background or abilities. Zoey’s journey on the court is just beginning, but the impact this lesson has had on her is already profound.

A big thank you to Ana for being an incredible role model, and to all of our coaches and families who make this community so special. Dream BIG Zoey!
