2025 Boys Tennis Season Shines Across San Diego
The 2025 boys tennis season has been a big win for student-athletes across San Diego, thanks in large part to early training opportunities and strong community support. From Canyon Hills to Clairemont, to City Heights and beyond, the impact of local community tennis programs is clear: our players are stepping up and shining on the courts.

Canyon Hills: Climbing the Ranks -
Canyon Hills High School, located in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, made a big move this year, competing in Division 2 tennis after climbing the ranks from last season. Lead Coach, Christopher Caylor, welcomed the challenge with open arms— trusting the talent of his players.
A lot of that talent can be traced back to De Portola Middle School, where many of his players got their start through AST (After School Tennis). Years of early practice meant these athletes came into the season confident and ready to compete. Sophomore, Will Vosburgh, was a huge help in pushing Canyon Hills into the top 10 schools in their division this year — a huge milestone for the team! Will says, "I am appreciative of the community tennis lessons I had at a younger age at elementary and middle school. As a high school player now, I not only love the sport but I am skilled and I am able help lead my team each match”.

Madison High: Homegrown Talent Takes the Lead - Over at Madison High School, the story is just as inspiring. Their team features players who began their tennis journeys at Innovation Middle School - another key AST program location, in the Clairemont neighborhood. Sophomore, Troy Nguyen, is a shining example of what early training can do. Now the team’s #1 player, Troy says, “I’m grateful for the opportunity I had at a younger age to learn tennis and build my confidence on the courts. My middle school coach helped me learn the game and I've made lasting friendships along the way.” Joining varsity as a freshman gave Troy the boost he needed, and he continues to push himself match after match. His growth proves that consistent effort, combined with solid community programs, really does pay off.

Gompers Prep: From Rec Center to Team Leader
- Gompers Preparatory Academy has also benefited from YTSD community programming. Senior, Liul Tamirat, just wrapped up his fourth season of tennis and has grown into a powerful presence on the team. Weekly lessons at the Urban Village Recreation Center have provided him the tools to take on tougher competition this year. Leading the team as their #1 player, Liul makes his coaches proud. AST instructor, Ian Chain, says "Liul's efforts on the court during practice, led to his success throughout the 2025 boys high school season. His journey is a perfect example of how consistent support and coaching can make all the difference."
Every year, we see AST players transitioning from local elementary and middle schools into high school tennis programs across San Diego. Thanks to the dedication of community coaches and organizations like YTSD, these players aren’t just participating—they’re excelling. We’re so proud of the growth, grit, and passion our players bring to the court each season. To every coach, volunteer, and player out there: keep working hard, keep loving the game—and know that we’re watching and cheering for you every step of the way!
